Bafana Bafana’s unbeaten home record under Hugo Broos came to a disappointing end on Tuesday night as Panama secured a 2-1 victory in a high-octane international friendly at a vibrant, sold-out Cape Town Stadium.
In what was expected to be a celebratory home farewell before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, Bafana found themselves undone by two set-piece goals, despite a moment of brilliance from former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
The match began with a frantic energy, fueled by a Cape Town crowd that has fully rediscovered its love for the national team. While South Africa looked to control possession, Panama remained a constant threat on the break. Early yellow cards for Aníbal Godoy and Adalberto Carrasquilla signalled the competitive nature of the “friendly.”
Bafana’s best chance of the half fell to Bongokuhle Hlongwane in the 42nd minute, but his effort missed the target after a clever setup by the lively Relebohile Mofokeng. Ronwen Williams, playing his final minutes on home soil before the World Cup, was called into action twice to deny Ismael Díaz, keeping the scores level at the break.

Hugo Broos rang the changes at halftime, introducing Evidence Makgopa for Lyle Foster and Renaldo Leaner for Williams. However, it was the Central Americans who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Following a save by Leaner from a Díaz effort, José Córdoba was quickest to react, stabbing the ball home from close range.
The lead lasted only six minutes. In the 64th minute, Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a moment of pure magic. Picking up a pass from the veteran Themba Zwane, the defender unleashed a thunderous left-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the top left corner, sending the Cape Town faithful into raptures.
With the game hanging in the balance, both coaches utilised their benches to find a winner. It was Panama, however, who struck the decisive blow in the 77th minute. A corner from José “Puma” Rodríguez found Jiovany Ramos, who rose highest to power a header past Leaner.
Broos introduced Thalente Mbatha and Sphephelo Sithole late on to spark a comeback, but the Panamanian defence, marshalled by the physical Cristian Martínez, held firm. The closing stages were marred by a string of yellow cards and injuries, with Rodríguez forced off after a collision.

While the result snaps Bafana’s impressive home run under the Belgian mentor, the two-legged affair—following a 1-1 draw in Durban—provides Broos with plenty of data ahead of the June 11 opener against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
The focus now shifts entirely to North America, as South Africa prepares to test themselves against the world’s elite in just a few months’ time.
