After a run of successful results in his role as interim coach, Pape Thiaw is poised to be confirmed as the head coach of the Senegal national team according to Senegalese media.
The news comes after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) on Tuesday where deciding on the next permanent head coach was one of the major priorities. According to Senegalese outlet DSports, Thiaw was fully supported by the Executive Committee led by FSF president Augustin Senghor who denied rumors that linked the head coach job to two other former Senegal national team players, Habib Bèye and Omar Daf.
Thiaw appears set to take on the full-time job after a successful internship as interim coach. The 43-year-old, a former striker who played in France, Switzerland, Russia and Spain during his playing career, also was a member of the famous Senegal squad that reached the quarterfinals at the 2002 FIFA World Cup as well as the final of the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He became interim coach in October following the dismissal of renowned tactician Aliou Cissé due to an underwhelming start in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying.
It was a difficult task to succeed Cissé who had a successful nine-year spell in charge but Thiaw won all four of his matches in 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying with eight goals scored and zero conceded. Thiaw announced himself as a rising coaching star after leading Senegal to the title at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) where Les Lions Locaux defeated hosts Algeria in the final.
