Pasuwa declares Mwisho Mhango ready for Flames

Germany-based Malawian forward Mwisho Mhango has earned yet another seal of approval signalling his readiness for the big football stage.

In February, Hannover 96 coach Christian Titz provided positive feedback on the progress on the 2025 COSAFA Under-20 Youth Championship stand-out player.

The 18-year-old signed a five-year contract with the 2 Bundesliga team last September from Lilongwe-based ASCENT Soccer.

Now, Malawi national team coach Kalisto Pasuwa has declared Mhango ready for the demands of playing for the Flames in the jungle of international football.

The youngster debuted for the Flames on Saturday in the opening match of Mukuru Four Nations Tournament underway in Botswana.

Pasuwa handed the youngster his debut during the game that ended goalless against Zambia in regulation time. Chipolopolo eventually prevailed 9-8 on post-match penalties at Oben Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown.

In a post-match interview with the media, the Zimbabwean coach said he was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Mhango can compete with the big boys.

“He is one young player I wanted to see in this bigger tournament. I can say he has fared well. He can be part of us even in the senior side. He did well. We gave him 65 to 85 minutes which is okay for the young boy,” Pasuwa said.

What Hannover 96 coach said about Malawian starlet

This is the latest approval for Mhango coming after Hannover 96 boss Titz gave a positive assessment of the Junior Flames striker after he featured for 90 minutes in a friendly against fellow 2 Bundesliga opponents Kickers Emden recently. Hannover won the practice match 3-2.

Titz refused to give timelines as to when Mhango would be thrown into the main squad, saying he still needs to work on some aspects of his game. The coach said the big areas for improvement were in “in his work off the ball.”

As a non-European Union player, he is ineligible to play for the Under-23 team in the Regionalliga Nord for Germany. In view of this, Hannover have not ruled out a possible loan move for the Malawian.

Mhango shone brightly at the 2025 COSAFA Youth Championship scoring five goals in three games for Malawi who reached the final. He won the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards.
