Percy Tau scores first V.League goal for Nam Dinh

After nearly five months with Vietnamese club Nam Dinh, former South Africa national team forward Percy Tau scored his first goal with the club in a 1-1 V.League draw with Hong Linh Ha Tinh on Monday.

It took less than four minutes for the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns star to strike. After winning the ball in midfield, a pass out to the right wing was poorly read by a Hong Tinh Ha Linh fullback.

Tau was able to receive the ball with space to run into and the veteran forward drove into the penalty area before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Thanh Tung Nguyen. He now has one goal and three assists in seventeen appearances for his club across all competitions.

How has Percy Tau’s Vietnam adventure unfolded?

It has been a bit of a struggle for the 31-year-old to assert himself in Vietnam’s top flight as well as in Asian interclub competition. His club, the defending V.League champions, are only a point out of the relegation zone with 12 points from 12 matches. Nam Dinh also failed to get out of the group stage in the AFC Champions League 2.

Their best performances have come in the ASEAN Club Championship for clubs based in the Southeast Asian region. A first place finish in Group B advanced the club from northern Vietnam into the semifinals where they will clash with Malaysian club Selangor in May.

There will be a couple weeks before Nam Dinh return to action in the V.League where they will travel to face Viettel on February 24. Champions of the last two editions of the league, Nam Dinh have not won a league match since late August over nine matches.
