Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has openly stated the salary he expects from Kaizer Chiefs, or any other PSL club, should they wish to secure his services.
The 31-year-old recently became a free agent after his short-term contract with Qatar SC concluded in January 2025, with the club opting not to extend his stay.
This turn of events has left him weighing his options for the upcoming 2025/26 season, and a move back to the PSL could be a significant step in revitalising his career ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
While the spotlight is naturally on which club will secure his services, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly forward has made it clear that he is open to offers from any Betway Premiership club.
He indicated that he would be willing to accept an offer of R450,000 per month from Chiefs, or any other PSL club, as he eyes a potential return to the South African top flight.
Speaking with MSW on 94.7, Tau was pressed on his salary expectations for a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs.
"I am Kaizer [Motaung], I at Naturena offer you R450,000 a month. Do you accept?" Marawa probed.
"For how many years?" Tau responded, ever the negotiator.
"You sign two with an option," Marawa clarified.
"Perfect," Tau confirmed, signalling his agreement to that figure.
The talented forward emphasised that he doesn't make unreasonable demands during transfer negotiations. "I am very reasonable when it comes to contract dealings. I am not going to ask for something I know a club is not going to offer me," he stated.
Tau added: "If that situation were to happen [to receive an offer from Chiefs], I would pay attention to it. But there are still other clubs in the PSL, I mean I played for Sundowns, so I cannot write them off."
He further elaborated, "It’s a team that I played for, I won, and I’ve got so much love for the team and the fans. If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs does, then it won’t be my fault but theirs that I’ve gone to join Chiefs."
Tau emphasised his openness to all possibilities: "But I’ll listen to anybody, so let’s not rule out Orlando Pirates or even Stellenbosch, SuperSport United. I will not rule out anyone. My decision will be based on who gives me a contract because, at the end of the day, I still have to support my family."
Should Percy Tau opt for a return to the Betway Premiership next season, he's unlikely to be short on offers.
Tau's last stint in South African football was during the 2017/18 season before his move to English Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion. Brighton subsequently loaned him to Belgian clubs Union SG, Club Brugge, and Anderlecht. The "Lion of Judah" eventually made his Brighton debut in January 2021.
In August 2021, Brighton sold Tau to Al Ahly, where he achieved significant success, including winning two CAF Champions League titles with the Egyptian giants.
