Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has credited an inspirational pre-match video, orchestrated by coach Nasreddine Nabi, as a key motivator in Amakhosi’s Nedbank Cup final performance.
Defying expectations, Chiefs overcame their recent struggles to secure a 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in Saturday's Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Goals from Gaston Sirino and Yusuf Maart sealed the win for Amakhosi, with Evidence Makgopa netting for Pirates.
This triumph marks Chiefs' first major trophy in almost a decade, a remarkable turnaround considering their prior form, which saw them win just once in their last eight matches and languish in ninth place in the Betway Premiership.
Petersen, making his first start since Chiefs’ 2-0 loss to Polokwane City FC in December, credited a pre-match video for boosting the team's mindset.
According to the 30-year-old goalkeeper, the compilation video shown by coach Nabi in their pre-match meeting served as the vital extra boost that propelled them to victory against Pirates.
“Before the game in our pre-match talk, we had a video, like a compilation from all our families and kids sending us messages,” revealed Petersen, addressing the media after the game in Durban. “That was enough for us.
“Enough encouragement for us to go and fight. It made us realise that we’re not fighting for ourselves. There are millions of people out there supporting us, spending their last cent to come out and watch it. This is for them.”
Petersen added that the widespread doubts surrounding the team made the victory all the more satisfying.
“It was special because there was a lot of doubt. It doesn’t matter who we played on Saturday. There was always going to be that ‘when are they going to break the duck’, ‘when are they going to win a trophy’. I think just the moment itself, whether we played any other team, we wanted it more,” he added.
"We were fighting not only for us, but also millions of people who had our backs through the bad times. Today [Saturday] made it sweet because all our supporters were supporting us. We had all the love from our families.”
