Petro de Luanda win Angola’s Super Cup to begin season

Angolan league champions Petro de Luanda got their 2025-26 season off to a winning start on Saturday by defeating Kabuscorp 3-1 in the Supertaça de Angola.

The powerhouse from the capital secured another trophy without too many issues against Taça de Angola champions Kabuscorp. New signing Tiago Reis was the star, making a strong impression on his competitive debut for Os Tricolores.

The Brazilian forward arrived to get on the end of a cross and finish from close range in the 39th minute to put the favorites ahead. The former Vasco da Gama player then doubled his tally close to the hour mark with a perfect header.

A late charge from fellow Luanda club Kabuscorp saw them pull a goal back but any hopes of a come back were dashed by an own goal a couple of minutes later. It is Petro’s ninth Supertaça, a trophy they have now claimed for three consecutive seasons.

Petro will now get set for domestic league competition in Angola’s top flight Girabola as well as the CAF Champions League campaign. As for the latter, they begin with the first of two matches against Mauritian club Cercle De Joachim next Saturday before returning home for the second leg a week later.
