Orlando Pirates showed no mercy on Valentine’s Day, delivering a clinical performance to brush aside Marumo Gallants 3-0 at a buzzing Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto.
The victory ensures the Buccaneers head into the business end of the season with a commanding six-point cushion at the summit of the Betway Premiership.
The result sets the stage for a mouth-watering “blockbuster” clash against second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns this coming Wednesday at FNB Stadium. Should the Sea Robbers defeat the Brazilians, they will open a daunting nine-point lead with just 13 games remaining in the campaign.
While the rest of the country celebrated the day of love, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men were in a ruthless mood. On the same afternoon, Sundowns kept their CAF Champions League hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger, but their domestic focus now shifts to a desperate game of “catch-up.”
From the first whistle, the Sea Robbers looked like a team destined for silverware. Following club legend Benedict Vilakazi’s midweek claim that Pirates possess the best attack in the land, the frontline played with a point to prove.
The breakthrough arrived as early as the fourth minute. After Gallants’ Katlego Otladisa rattled the post just seconds earlier, Pirates launched a devastating counter-attack. Yamela Mbuthuma found the bottom right corner with a composed finish following a precise assist from the ever-present Relebohile Mofokeng.

The early goal settled the nerves of the home faithful, who displayed a massive Valentine’s Day banner at the centerline while singing their lungs out. Gallants, currently fighting for survival at the foot of the table, struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of Pirates’ transition play.
The lead was doubled in the 29th minute when Patrick Maswanganyi unleashed a trademark left-footed strike from outside the box, findng the bottom corner after being teed up by Oswin Appollis.

The second half was a professional masterclass in game management. While Pirates maintained their tempo and created numerous openings, they had to be wary of Gallants’ Jaisen Clifford, who proved to be a handful for the Pirates defense and came close to pulling one back in the final 15 minutes.
However, the contest was officially ended in the 85th minute. Relebohile Mofokeng turned from provider to scorer, rifling a right-footed shot into the top left corner after a clever assist from Nkosikhona Ndaba. The 3-0 scoreline effectively killed off any hope of a Gallants comeback.

With this victory, Pirates move to 38 points after 16 matches. The psychological significance of this result cannot be overstated. By opening a six-point gap, they have placed the pressure firmly on Sundowns, who hold a game in hand but face a congested and grueling fixture list.
All roads now lead to the FNB Stadium on Wednesday. For Pirates, it is a chance to move within touching distance of their first league title since 2012. For Sundowns, it is a must-win battle to stop the black-and-white tide from sweeping away their domestic dominance.
