Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi has made a defiant statement ahead of the MTN8 final, declaring that the Soweto giants have no intention of surrendering their trophy to Stellenbosch FC.
Sibisi was speaking during Pirates’ media open day at the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday after the club’s training session.
The 29-year-old defender has been largely absent in the new season, making only a single appearance in the 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Polokwane City FC . He was a notable absentee in both legs of the MTN8 semifinal clash against Mamelodi Sundowns.
But having overcome his injury, Sibisi is now ready to contribute as the team chases a record fourth consecutive MTN8 title.
Pirates will take on Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 final, a rematch of last season’s clash. The match is set for this Saturday at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, with kickoff scheduled for 6 PM (South African time).
“Preparations for the game are going well,” said Sibisi. “It’s good to be back training with the players again. It’s been a positive week for us, and we are looking forward to creating history in front of a packed Mbombela.”
The Bucs captain also touched on his return from his setback, stating that he is raring to go for the final.
“It’s never easy whenever you are injured,” he added.”In terms of selection, I am ready for the weekend.”
In his absence, young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has stepped up, delivering a series of impressive performances. Sibisi was quick to praise his teammate’s contribution.
“Credit to Mbokazi for the way he has been leading the team in my absence,” declared Sibisi.”Kudos to him for what he’s been doing for both the club and the national team. As a group, we embrace competition and will do everything to create history and keep the cup. After all, it is our cup.”
