Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has delivered a massive squad update that could shift the tactical balance of Saturday’s sold-out Soweto Derby.
Speaking ahead of the 15:30 kickoff at FNB Stadium, Ouaddou confirmed that the Buccaneers’ medical room has finally cleared two of the team’s most influential figures just in time for the clash against Kaizer Chiefs. Both players, who have been notable absentees during Pirates’ recent slump, returned to full team training this week.
The news comes as a relief to the Ghost, especially regarding the midfield, where speculation had been mounting over a certain player’s extended absence.
“I’m very happy that he joined the group because there were a lot of questions around him,” Ouaddou told the media. “But he was injured as well, and I’m happy to have him back.”
The coach was referring to Thalente Mbatha, who has been sidelined for the last four matches. His return to the engine room is seen as a vital stabilising factor for a side that recently crashed out of the Nedbank Cup to Casric Stars.
In addition to the midfield reinforcement, Pirates’ frontline is set to be bolstered by the return of Evidence Makgopa.
The 25-year-old striker, who has contributed three goals and three assists in 14 league appearances this season, missed the last two defeats against Mamelodi Sundowns and Casric Stars. Ouaddou confirmed that after a two-week layoff, the forward is “doing very well” and is ready to fight for his spot in the starting XI.
A Clash of Wounded Giants
The stakes for this Betway Premiership showdown couldn’t be higher. Pirates are currently locked in a dead heat at the top of the table:
Orlando Pirates: 38 Points (Joint 1st)
Mamelodi Sundowns: 38 Points (Joint 1st)
Kaizer Chiefs: 30 Points (4th – with a game in hand)
While Pirates are desperate to reclaim the outright lead from Sundowns, Chiefs are looking for redemption after their own midweek 2-1 slip-up against Stellenbosch FC.
With Makgopa and Mbatha back in the fold, Ouaddou finally has his key weapons available to ensure the Buccaneers don’t leave the FNB Stadium empty-handed.
