The talented 20-year-old was a conspicuous absentee from the squad that thrashed Lioli FC 4-0 on Saturday in the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers cruised to a 7-0 aggregate victory over the Lesotho champions, thanks to braces from Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma in the home leg.
Mofokeng has been a consistent presence for the Soweto giants this season, featuring in 10 matches across all competitions. His potential absence would be a blow as Pirates look to continue their impressive run of form.
The Soweto giants have been on a hot streak, with the Champions League victory marking their sixth consecutive win in all competitions. Their return to league action presents an opportunity to stretch their Premiership winning run to five games.
Despite a strong defensive record in the league—collecting 12 points without conceding a goal during this winning stretch—the club’s goal-scoring exploits haven’t fully translated to their home league fixtures. Pirates have noted that while they are finding their stride, they’ve only netted twice in three league games at Orlando Stadium.
The official club statement acknowledged the injury concerns, confirming that Mofokeng “is among the doubtful starters for Tuesday’s match after sitting out the clash against Lioli.”
Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will be hoping Mofokeng passes the late assessment to provide an attacking spark as they face a known stubborn side in TS Galaxy on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (SA time).
