Orlando Pirates’ title aspirations took a significant hit on Friday night as they were held to a pulsating 2-2 draw by a resilient Richards Bay FC at a capacity uMhlathuze Sports Complex.
In a Betway Premiership match defined by spectacular long-range strikes, the Buccaneers needed a 92nd-minute equaliser from Lebone Seema to rescue a point. However, the result feels more like a defeat for Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side, who now sit on 55 points after 24 games—trailing Mamelodi Sundowns by a point despite the defending champions having a game in hand.
With Sundowns currently on continental duty in Tunisia to face Esperance, the Brazilians will be smiling at the result, knowing they have a golden opportunity to open a four-point lead at the summit of the Betway Premiership when they return to domestic action.
The ‘Natal Rich Boyz’ showed early intent and stunned the visitors in the 10th minute. Following a set-piece, Simphiwe Mcineka headed the ball into the path of Thulani Gumede, who unleashed a thunderous right-footed effort from outside the box that flew into the top right corner, leaving Sipho Chaine helpless.
Pirates struggled to find their rhythm in the first half but came out transformed after the break. Just seven minutes into the second period, Oswin Appollis restored parity, tapping home from close range after a pinpoint cross from the ever-dangerous Relebohile Mofokeng.
The momentum seemed to be with the Soweto Giants, but Richards Bay had other plans. In the 59th minute, the home side reclaimed the lead through another moment of individual brilliance. Lindokuhle Zikhali picked up a pass from Lundi Mahala and hammered a low, long-range drive into the bottom right corner to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
Pirates threw everything at the hosts, introducing Evidence Makgopa and Patrick Maswanganyi to spark a late comeback. Ian Otieno, in the Richards Bay goal, produced a string of heroic saves—most notably denying Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa from point-blank range.
The pressure finally told in the second minute of stoppage time. Veteran defender Deon Hotto provided the assist for Lebone Seema, who struck a clinical right-footed shot from outside the area into the bottom left corner, silencing the Richards Bay faithful and securing a frantic 2-2 draw.
Despite the late equalizer, the statistics told the story of a missed opportunity for Pirates:
Total Points: 55 (1 point behind Sundowns)
Games Played: 24 (Sundowns have 1 game in hand)
Richards Bay Record: Extended their home unbeaten run to seven matches.
The draw sees Richards Bay climb to 10th on the log with 27 points, now just a single point away from a coveted top-eight spot. For Pirates, the focus shifts to a nervous wait for Sundowns’ next league fixture, as their grip on the title race continues to loosen.
