The Betway Premiership title race is coming down to the wire between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns and both teams maintained their positions with victories on Tuesday.

Relebohile Mofokeng’s beautiful curled effort started the slaughter for the Bucs, who ran out to a 3-0 lead by halftime courtesy of goals from Mofokeng and fellow Bafana Bafana attacker Oswin Appollis at the Orlando Stadium. An own goal confirmed the lopsided lead at the interval in an eventual 5-0 destruction.

And Mofokeng struck again just after the hour mark to complete his brace along with a late contribution from Appollis to make it a dominant effort. After a disappointing home draw with Siwelele FC in mid-March, the popular Soweto club have rebounded with two wins by a combined 10-0 score against TS Galaxy and Arrows.

Over in Durban, hosts Durban City fell behind to an early Tsiki Ntsabaleng goal and could not mount a comeback in their 0-1 defeat to Sundowns.

Receiving a pass from Chilean midfield maestro Marcelo Allende in the 10th minute, the on loan attacker from Major League Soccer club FC Dallas made no mistake with a sharp finish past former Bafana goalkeeper Darren Keet.

Despite the close score, hosts Durban City hardly presented a challenge after halftime with only one shot attempt at Ronwen Williams’ goal.

Pirates and Downs remain close

And the title race remains tight. Only two points separate the two contenders with seven matches remaining. For Masandawana, the reigning champions, they will have to contend with playing on multiple fronts with the CAF Champions League semifinals approaching this weekend. They will travel to Tunisia to face Espérance Tunis for the first leg on Sunday.

For the Bucs, their focus is entirely on the league. They will travel to face Richards Bay on Friday where they must avoid any slip-ups to stay within reach of their title rivals, who have captured the last eight top flight league titles.
