The U-20 Africa Cup of Nations victory for Amajita was met with delight by former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane.
Gomolemo Kekana's stunning second-half goal, assisted by goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe, secured South Africa's U-20 AFCON victory over Morocco in the final at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday night in Egypt.
This marks Amajita's first AFCON title, and is sweet revenge 24 years after their previous final defeat by Morocco.
The AFCON victory ignited celebrations in South Africa, with multi-award-winning coach Pitso Mosimane among those lauding Raymond Mdaka and his triumphant team.
“SA U20, conquering Africa,” he wrote on his official X account. “Again, it is not the first time we are experiencing all these! We are the Champs of Africa.
“What a period in our life that SA are experiencing all these good achievements.”
Meanwhile, South Africa not only clinched their maiden U-20 title but also swept the major individual awards. Tylon Smith was crowned Best Player for his consistently influential performances, which were instrumental in Amajita's journey, including their 1-0 final triumph over Morocco. The 19-year-old defender also scored the decisive semi-final goal against Nigeria.
Adding to the accolades, goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe was named Best Goalkeeper, having recorded an impressive four clean sheets and the most saves (24) throughout the tournament. His crucial saves in the final were key to ensuring South Africa's victory.
