Pitso Mosimane ‘responds’ to calls from Egypt

Former Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane has ‘responded’ to calls from some fans in the Egyptian football circles.

The former Bafana Bafana mentor is a respected figure in Egypt owing to his impeccable track record with the Club of the Century.

He steered Al Ahly to two CAF Champions League titles and reached the final in his final year with the team.

Mosimane’s glory days at Al Ahly

Mosimane also bagged two FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals in addition to other domestic silverware.

Therefore, the former Mamelodi Sundowns handler left with his held high in 2022 to pursue other interests in Saudi Arabia.

The 61-year-old accepted the challenge of managing Saudi Arabia’s second tier league side at Al-Ahli. He steered them back to where they belong—Saudi Pro League.

However, since winning the second division league championship with Al-Ahli, Mosimane has never settled in one club beyond months.

The former SuperSport United trainer has since had stints with clubs such as Abha Club (Saudi Arabia), Al-Wahda (Qatar) and Esteghlal FC in Iran.

Jose Riveiro’s struggles turn supporters to Mosimane

The name of Mosimane is popping in conversations at Al Ahly after a slow start under the reign of Jose Riveiro.

The former Orlando Pirates tactician has posted five points in three Egyptian league matches, scoring six goals and conceding thrice.

The Spaniard replaced Swiss mentor Marcel Koller who left the club after exiting the CAF Champions League semi-finals. Koller matched Mosimane’s haul of two CAF Champions League titles in his hugely successful tenure.

But the continued quest for continental glory cost his job as he seemed to struggle in his third year in charge of the Reds, thereby paving the way for Riveiro.

Now, the struggles of the ex-Pirates coach have seen fans reminiscing the good days of Mosimane with some using social media platforms such as x.com, urging him to come back.

What the fans told Mosimane

“From the depths of my heart as one of Al-Ahly’s fans, I miss you so much, Captain @TheRealPitso,” @Hany238447 tweeted.

“With you, we lived unforgettable moments of pride, joy, courage, and greatness in the stands and on the field. You are not just an ordinary coach, but a part of our history and our most beautiful memories,”

“And no matter how far the distances separate us, you will always remain in our hearts @TheRealPitso”

Another supporter Abdelrahman Ahmed Sh. @abdosh6000 tweeted: “We miss him @TheRealPitsoso much as Al Ahly fans. He loves us, and we love him. Together, we made history and glory, and we lived unforgettable happy moments.

“Come back to Ahly to achieve glory,” @shemius_1804 chipped in.

The ex-Sundowns coach’s response

Hesham @HecAhly also joined the conversation, saying “All of Al Aly Fans Love You Mr. Pitso & They wish You back. We miss you Jingles.”

Ezz Radwan @EzzRadwan3 had a simple question to Mosimane: “Can you return once again to the walls of the Red Fort?”

In a response, Mosimane simply tweed with emojis of appreciation and love.

The 2016 CAF Champions League winner with Sundowns has not coached any team since leaving Esteghlal FC in January 2025 following a pay dispute.
