Bayer Leverkusen winger Jeremie Frimpong has opened up on the pressure that comes with playing in the Bundesliga and under manager Xabi Alonso. The 24-year-old played a key role in Leverkusen’s glorious 2023-24 season in German football where they swept the board in three competitions.
Leverkusen grabbed the Bundesliga, clutched on to the DFB Pokal and the DFL Super Cup under Spanish manager Alonso.
Frimpong in an exclusive interview with Pan-Africa Football revealed the quality level of the Bundesliga.
“The competition is very high [and] I think every match is a tough task. The Bundesliga is a high level competition and you have to be in your game or they will finish you,” Frimpong told Pan-Africa Football.
“I feel like in Europe the set up is good. I’m not saying the set up is bad here [in Ghana] but in Europe it is really stable. I’ve never watched the Ghanaian league so I cannot talk about it so I can only talk about what I’ve seen."
“So the league is very stable in Europe. There is barely any problem and I think if they bring stability here [in Ghana], everything will be fine,” Frimpong told Pan-Africa Football.
Frimpong started his football journey at the Manchester City Academy before transferring to Scottish giants, Celtic in 2019 - spending two seasons at the Celtic Park.
He signed for Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 in an undisclosed fee on a four-and-half-year deal. He extended his stay at the Bay Arena until 2028 with a release clause of £35 million.
Jeremie Frimpong has equally touched on the competitiveness that comes with playing for the Dutch national team.
He has featured for the Dutch U-19, U-20, U-21 and the senior national team where he is capped 10 times with a goal to his credit.
“Of course you play with quality players, people who are playing in the Premier League, Serie A and the Bundesliga. So that competition in the national team is difficult as well when you play in the Euros, the World Cup, Nations League," Frimpong said.
