Points deduction looms for Gallants over player eligibility saga

Betway Premiership outfit Marumo Gallants is facing a potential points deduction as a dispute over midfielder Monde Mphambaniso’s clearance certificate escalates.

The controversy stems from Gallants’ acquisition of Moroka Swallows‘ top-flight status in July 2024, and their subsequent sale of their Motsepe Foundation Championship status, which became Leruma United.

Cape Town City FC initiated arbitration proceedings, arguing that Mphambaniso, who played for Gallants’ former Motsepe Foundation Championship team (now Leruma United), was not properly cleared. CT City alleges that Marumo Gallants violated Rule 31.8.9.3 of the National Soccer League (NSL) handbook, which mandates a clearance certificate for players previously registered as professionals with a member club.

Cape Town City FC has won their case at SAFA’s arbitration, paving the way for the PSL disciplinary committee to launch an investigation into Mphambaniso’s eligibility.

Should the disciplinary committee rule against Gallants, the Bloemfontein-based club could face a points deduction for all 26 matches in which Mphambaniso featured last season. Such a ruling would be a significant blow for Gallants, who finished 10th in the Premiership last season with 32 points from 28 games.

For Cape Town City FC, who failed to retain their top-flight status in the recent PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs (won by Orbit College), this legal challenge represents a final, desperate attempt to avoid relegation.

A favourable outcome could see them reinstated in the Premiership, potentially sending Gallants into the playoffs instead.
