Porto debutant Fofana scores, Umar Abubakar opens Primeira Liga account with Famalicão

Seko Fofana’s debuted with a goal for FC Porto in their 1-1 draw with reigning champions Sporting CP while former Nigeria U-17 forward Umar Abubakar celebrated his first goal in Portugal’s Primeira Liga on Monday.

Fofana, signed on loan from French Ligue 1 club Rennes before the winter transfer deadline, finished off a frantic sequence to open the scoring in the 76th minute for his new club.

It was not quite a dream debut for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champion. The Ivorian’s goal was cancelled out at the end of a long period of stoppage time when Colombian forward Luis Suárez finished from a rebound after his penalty kick was saved.

Another Porto signing, Nigerian forward Terem Moffi, was in the matchday squad for the first time since his own loan transfer but did not make a debut. Os Dragões remain four points ahead of Sporting at the top of the table.

But Moffi’s compatriot, 19-year-old Abubakar, scored his first professional goal in European club football earlier in the day. He was in the right place to finish off visitors AFS with a tap in to complete the scoring in Famalicão’s 3-1 victory.

Abubakar joined ahead of the 2025-26 season from Abuja-based academy Footwork FC for a €800,000 fee after spending the 2024-25 season on loan with Belgian club KAA Gent alongside fellow former Nigeria U-17 star Abubakar Abdullahi.

Umar earned his transfer after starring with Gent’s reserve team in the Belgian third tier, scoring 21 goals in 27 matches. Monday marked his first Primeira Liga start for his club after ten substitute appearances and a start against lower league opposition in the Taça de Portugal.

Famalicão move into sixth place with the result and Abubakar appears to be in line for more minutes when his club travels to face Sporting next Sunday.
