The Premier League has celebrated Zimbabwean Marshall Munetsi’s first goal for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ colours in the one-all draw against Everton FC on Saturday.

Reacting to the goal, the Premier League wrote on its Facebook page to recall Benjani Mwaruwari as the last Zimbabwean to have found the back of the net in the Premier League in January 2011.

“Marshall Munetsi is the first Zimbabwean to score in the Premier League since Benjani, 14 years ago!,” reads a post on the Premier League’s official Facebook page with a picture of Munetsi and Mwaruwari.

Mwaruwari was then playing for Portsmouth in a career that also saw him signing for Manchester City. The Premier League Facebook post has since ignited debate on social media.

Former Zimbabwean international Cephas Chimedza found a sense of humour in Munetsi’s feat, saying he stood a chance of breaking legendary Alan Shearer’s goal-scoring record.

The ex-Caps United left-back wrote: “259 to go, Shearer, your record is under threat.”

Football fan Phomolo Skhosana from South Africa traced Munetsi’s ups and downs while on the books of Orlando Pirates.

“I remember how he was cursed in 2019 for his red card that cost us(Pirates) the Telkom Knockout final. The following season, he moved to France and the rest was history. This guy deserves all the good things happening to him,” he said.

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has since praised his January signing, Munetsi, who scored an equaliser after the Toffees had taken the lead courtesy of Jack Harrison in the 33rd minute.

“But I think he deserves it because he's a player that has this speed that I like in a player. He gives everything to try to help the team, and in the end, he scored the goal and he will score more goals, for sure,” he said.

Munetsi will hope to continue with his fine run of form when Wolves face Southampton in their next league fixture.
