PSL have announced the details for the 2024/25 Promotional/Relegation Playoffs, setting the stage for the crucial end-of-season battles even as the participating clubs remain to be determined.
In a statement released late on Tuesday afternoon, PSL also confirmed that the playoffs will feature a mini three-team league comprising the 15th-placed team from the Betway Premiership and the second and third-placed finishers from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The Premiership currently has 15 teams following Royal AM's expulsion, eliminating automatic relegation. As it stands, Cape Town City FC occupies the precarious 15th position in the Premiership and face the risk of playoff participation.
Meanwhile, automatic promotion to the Premiership awaits the winner of the second-tier league, where Durban City FC (formerly Maritzburg United) currently lead with only one game remaining. Orbit College FC and Casric Stars occupy the second and third spots, respectively, setting up a tense final push in the Championship.
However, a point for Durban City FC in their last game of the season against Cape Town Spurs would see them crowned champions as they are three points ahead of Orbit College.
The playoffs are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, and will conclude on June 14th, determining which team will compete in the SA elite league, while the other two will play in the second division.
“The Promotion Play-Off draw will be conducted on Thursday, 15 May 2025. The draw will be broadcast live on the Official PSL Facebook Page, starting at 10h00,” said the PSL.
The PSL outlined the procedure for the Promotion Play-Off draw, which will determine the fixture schedule for the crucial end-of-season mini-league.
According to the official rules, the club finishing 15th in the Premier Division will automatically be designated as CLUB1.
A public draw will then be conducted to determine which of the two participating Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs (the teams finishing second and third) will be designated as CLUB2 and CLUB3.
For the purpose of the draw, these second and third-placed Championship teams will be identified as NFD2 and NFD3, respectively.
