Junior Dion’s double led Golden Arrows to victory on Friday while a second half surge helped Durban City strengthen their position in 6th place in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL).
A first half expulsion saw Magesi FC midfielder Kgomotso Mosadi sent off after receiving his second yellow card but visitors Arrows still did not have an easy time vanquishing the hosts.
However, a strong start to the second half secured victory for the Durban side. In the 47th minute, Maxwele Ayabulela won the ball in the midfield and embarked on a swift run down the left wing of the Magesi penalty area. His low cross found Dion at the near post and the Ivorian finished with emphasis.
Soon after, Dion confirmed a two-goal advantage by bundling home from close range after his initial effort was stopped by goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze. After a five-match winless run in league play, Manqoba Mngqithi’s side will be eager to continue their sprint away from any potential relegation battle.
Back in Durban at the Chatsworth Stadium, Durban City also scored both of their goals in the second half to overcome slumping TS Galaxy.
An own goal in the 66th minute handed the hosts the lead before late on, a long punt from goalkeeper Darren Keet found substitute Luphumlo Sifumba, who looped his finish over Galaxy keeper Ira Tapé for his first professional goal.
