PSL case halts Durban City FC promotion, CT Spurs relegation in limbo

Durban City FC’s anticipated automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership has been stalled by a pending Premier Soccer League (PSL) case.

Simultaneously, Cape Town Spurs, who faced relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, now find a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of this very same PSL dispute.

Durban City played their last game of the season against CT Spurs, winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship tie1-0 at Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

They came into this game having already secured their top-flight status by winning the Championship title as they finished the season at the summit of the log.

Durban City had a consistent season as the KwaZulu-Natal club, formerly Maritzburg United, led the Motsepe Foundation Championship with 58 points from 30 games.

However, the PSL has withheld the trophy presentation as they investigate allegations that Durban City fielded an improperly registered player, Saziso Magawana. Both JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs lodged protests regarding Magawana’s eligibility, with the PSL’s Disciplinary Committee expected to rule on the matter next Tuesday.

Adding another layer to the drama, Cape Town Spurs, despite their loss to Durban City, face an uncertain relegation. The Urban Warriors, who had a disappointing season after their own relegation from the Premiership, finished 15th. While their defeat confirmed their drop to the ABC Motsepe League alongside 16th-placed Leruma United, a potential points deduction for Durban City could offer them an unexpected reprieve.

Meanwhile, Orbit College FC and Casric Stars have secured their places in the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs. They will compete against the Betway Premiership team that finishes in 15th position for a spot in the top league.
