Uganda head coach Paul Put believes his side merited more than a point following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tanzania in their Group C clash at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Cranes dominated large spells of the contest and were handed a golden opportunity to snatch victory deep into stoppage time, but Allan Okello fired his penalty over the bar to compound the frustration.
Tanzania had taken the lead through Simon Msuva, before Uche Ikpeazu restored parity after coming on from the bench, injecting renewed energy into Uganda’s attack.
Speaking after the final whistle, Put felt the balance of play tilted clearly in his team’s favour. “I don’t think we deserved just a draw. We created more chances and had more possession. Missing a penalty at that stage is very painful, but that is football.”
The Belgian tactician also pointed to the bigger picture, noting the youthful nature of his squad and the long-term objective of building a competitive team ahead of the 2027 AFCON, which Uganda will co-host.
“We have a very young team and part of my responsibility is to prepare this group for 2027,” Put added.

After two matches, the Cranes remain bottom of Group C with one point and must now turn their focus to a daunting final group fixture against Nigeria on Tuesday.
Despite the setback, Put urged his players to stay mentally strong. “I told the players we must keep believing and fight until the last game. We are disappointed, but we have to reset and prepare for Nigeria. It won’t be easy.”
Nigeria have already secured qualification to the knockout stages after edging Tunisia 3-2, while the top two teams in each group, along with the four best third-placed sides, will progress to the Round of 16.
