Pyramids FC’s fortunes plunge further with defeat to Modern Sport

Modern Sport claimed a statement away victory after edging past last season’s runners-up and newly crowned African champions Pyramids FC with Monday’s 2-1 win in the fourth round of the Nile Egyptian League.

The hosts struck early when Ghanam Mohamed headed home Ali Fawzi’s cross in the 10th minute. In the second half, Modern doubled their advantage after a handball by Pyramids FC striker Fiston Mayele gifted them a penalty. Ali Fawzi stepped up and converted in the 59th minute to make it 2-0.

Pyramids’ night went from bad to worse when Moroccan full-back Mohamed Chibi received a second yellow card for elbowing Mahmoud Mamdouh. The hosts managed a late consolation deep into stoppage time as Karim Hafez converted a penalty in the 96th minute, but it proved too little, too late.

The result highlights Pyramids’ shaky start to the campaign. After four matches, the Cairo-based club have collected only five points from one win, two draws, and one defeat, leaving them in eighth place.

For Modern Sport, it was a brilliant response to a tough opening schedule. Having already drawn 2-2 with Al Ahly, narrowly lost 2-1 to Zamalek, and beaten Alexandria’s Ittihad 2-1, they now sit fourth in the table on seven points—just one behind leaders Petrojet and level with Zamalek and Al Masry on goal difference.

Modern’s resilient performances against the league’s giants underline their credentials as a dangerous outsider this season despite fighting relegation last season.
