Qatar Stars League: Redouane Berkane named MOTM; Toko Ekambi opens account with Al Arabi

Rising Algerian forward Redouane Berkane was in top form and former Cameroon national team star Karl Toko Ekambi scored his first league goal on Thursday in the Qatar Stars League.

22-year-old Berkane, who arrived at Al Wakrah from Algeria Ligue 1 Professionnelle side JS Kabylie this season, now has 11 goals in 15 matches after providing two goals and an assist in a 4-0 home victory over Al Shahaniya. After converting a penalty kick to give his team the lead in the 21st minute, Berkane doubled the lead with simple finish from Ayoub Assal’s cross early in the second half.

Seven minutes later, Berkane returned the favor with a clever pass for Assal to score the third goal for the hosts.

Al Wakrah move up to 7th place on the 12-team table following the result. Berkane starred with Algeria at the 2025 FIFA Arab Cup with 2 goals and 2 assists from 4 matches for the quarterfinalists before making one subsitute appearance with Les Verts at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in another quarterfinal finish.

While a potential future African national team star thrived, former Cameroon forward Toko Ekambi was on target in Al Arabi’s 4-2 victory at Umm Salal earlier on Thursday.

The 33-year-old former Olympique Lyonnais and Villarreal striker placed his header perfectly from a Rodri cross to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors, who took advantage of a first half red card to the hosts to earn all three points.

Toko Ekambi, who scored his first two goals for the club in the QSL Cup, is looking to regain his scoring touch after falling out of form in the Saudi Pro League. He joined Al Arabi on a free transfer from Saudi club Al Fateh for the new year. The result strengthens the Doha club’s hold on 5th place and moves them within range of a top-3 position.
