A busy Wednesday from the Qatar Stars League saw plenty of contributions from African players in a six-goal showdown between Al Wakra and Al Gharafa while Karl Toko Ekambi marked back-to-back matches with a goal.
Ferjani Sassi and Yacine Brahimi continue to star for Al Gharafa but the visitors led a two-goal lead slip away against Amine Zouhzouh and hosts Al Wakra.
Unusually, Moroccan playmaker Zouhzouh used his head to put the hosts in front in the 25th minute. But Guinea-Bissau international forward Alvaro Djalo provided a response with a powerful low strike in first half stopage time after the Al Wakra defense failed to clear Brahimi’s cross.
And it was Algeria national team legend Brahimi who was influential in the second half. He hit his corner kick with pace in the 51st minute and the ball ricocheted off Tunisian midfielder Ferjani Sassi and into the goal for another goal contribution from Gharafa’s dynamic duo. Brahimi then controlled a cross and placed an accurate low shot to make it 3-1 in the 71st minute.
But the match was far from over. Luis Alberto pulled a goal back six minutes later before Almahdi Ali snatched a point for the hosts in second half stoppage time. Al Gharafa miss out on a big opportunity to secure third place and will need to win their final match against Al Shahaniya to achieve a top-3 finish.
In a day in which many matches were played simulataneously with only two rounds remaining, former Cameroon star Karl Toko Ekambi continued his strong return from injury with a goal in Al Arabi’s 1-1 draw with Qatar SC.

It was a classic goal from the veteran poacher, who latched onto a perfect pass from Qatar international midfielder Ahmed Fathi before finishing. The 33-year-old has now scored in consecutive matches for Al Arabi, who sit in 5th place three points back of Al Gharafa.
