Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Mike Rapatsa hasn’t held back in his assessment of the club’s current state following their heartbreaking elimination from the CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite the frustration sweeping through Naturena after the 2-1 defeat to Zamalek SC, Rapatsa believes that sacking co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze right now is not the answer—though he insists the duo looks “confused.”
With Chiefs now out of all cup competitions and sitting fourth in the Betway Premiership, Rapatsa argues that mid-season changes would be futile. However, he has called on management to stop settling for less when the season concludes.
“I believe that they must just finish [the season],” Rapatsa told FARPost. “Firing the coaches now will not help anything. But if they do get a coach, let them get someone with a high profile—a coach who knows his business and can handle a project of this magnitude.”
While Nasreddine Nabi ended the club’s infamous 10-year trophy drought by clinching the Nedbank Cup last season, Rapatsa warns that the club is currently “stagnant” rather than progressing. He pointed specifically to questionable tactical decisions in Egypt as proof of a technical team out of its depth.
Tactical Confusion: “Every week, we are exposed to a different team. Players who deserve to be in the starting lineup are on the bench.”
Questionable Selection: He highlighted the decision to start George Matlou—who had lacked match fitness—in a high-stakes away game against Zamalek as a major error.
Lack of Vision: Rapatsa insists the next appointment must align with a clear long-term vision from management, rather than just “patching holes.”
With the CAF dream over, the Soweto giants have only the league to focus on. They currently trail leaders Orlando Pirates by eight points, albeit with a game in hand. For Rapatsa, the remainder of the season is merely a countdown to a much-needed structural overhaul.
