Relebohile Mofokeng’s return looms for Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates have provided an encouraging injury update on winger Relebohile Mofokeng ahead of their Betway Premiership match against Chippa United this Sunday.

Mofokeng was a surprise absence from the Buccaneers’ 1-0 win against Orbit College FC midweek, a decision coach Abdeslam Ouaddou said was based on medical advice. The highly-rated Bafana Bafana international had played in all six of the club’s matches across all competitions before being sidelined.

The club has now hinted at his potential return for the match against the Chilli Boys at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, though they noted that captain Nkosinathi Sibisi and Deano van Rooyen are still recovering from their own injuries.

Pirates are on the hunt for their first away win of the season after a mixed start to their league campaign. The team currently sits ninth in the standings with six points from two wins, both at home against Stellenbosch and Orbit College.

However, their recent cup success, including a spot in another MTN8 final, has provided a significant boost. A win on Sunday could potentially see them climb into the top three, depending on other results.

Pirates Statement on Rele Mofokeng

“The Buccaneers have made a steady climb up the standings after finding themselves in unwanted territory following a tough start to their Premiership campaign. Their run of good results also includes cup success, having booked their spot in another MTN8 final,” the club said on Saturday.

“They are currently placed ninth in the Premiership standings with six points on the board, following wins at home to Stellenbosch and league newcomers Orbit College. Now back on the road, Pirates are on a quest for their first away win in the current league campaign.

“Victory on Sunday could potentially propel them as high as the top three, depending on the weekend’s results across the league.

“The fixtures in the lead-up to the trip to Gqeberha have, however, come at a cost, with star forward Relebohile Mofokeng recently joining the injury list. He was sidelined in midweek against Orbit, but could be back in action while the likes of captain Nkosinathi Sibisi and Deano van Rooyen remain on the mend after picking up.”
