Remo Stars FC coach Tiago Conde is refusing to concede defeat ahead of a seemingly impossible task: overturning a massive 5-1 deficit against Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.
The Nigerian side was comprehensively beaten at home last week in the second preliminary round, first leg, a result that brutally exposed the gulf in class and tactics between the two clubs. Now, travelling to Loftus Versfeld Stadium for Sunday’s second leg, Remo Stars need to win by at least four goals just to force penalties, making the mission look utterly daunting against a dominant Masandawana side.
The encounter between the PSL giants, Sundowns and Remo Stars, will kick off at 03:30 (SA time) this afternoon, with a place in the group stages at stake.
Despite the humiliation in front of their home fans in Abeokuta, Conde is publicly maintaining an air of belief, daringly suggesting the tie is still alive and plotting a shocking upset.
“If my players and I were not prepared or believe that we can win and score five goals and go to the group stage, there is no point in being here,” Conde stated firmly.
The coach insists his side is focused on learning from the first-leg thrashing and becoming more balanced for the return fixture.
“We trust and believe we can do it. Of course, it’s difficult, but we will be difficult as well for Mamelodi Sundowns for them to score another five goals,” he argued.
Conde wrapped up his audacious assessment by stressing that football is simply a contest of equals, regardless of the previous scoreline.
“It’s difficult for both sides. It’s 11 against 11 for 90 minutes, we know it’s hard work.”
Conde revealed that their preparation has been focused on correcting the flaws that led to the heavy defeat.
“What we prepared and want to do is what we tried to do in the first leg, some things that did not happen. Now we are trying to correct things and be more effective and balanced, what a Champions League game is like,” he concluded.
