Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) defending champions Remo Stars were forced to stage a comeback to earn a point in a 1-1 draw against Rivers United as the 2025/2026 season got underway on Friday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The venue is serving as Remo Stars’ temporary home while their stadium in Ikenne undergoes renovation.
Rivers United stunned the home crowd just three minutes into the contest when a cross from Timothy Zachariah found the head of Aniekeme Okon from close range past helpless goalkeeper Adebiyi Serge Obassa.
However, the champions’ response was swift and decisive. Just six minutes later, newly acquired forward Victor Mbaoma announced his return to the NPFL with a well-taken equalizer by connecting well with Samuel Anakwe’s pass to score.
Remo Stars nearly took the lead in the 20th minute when a free-kick from midfielder Michael Ibe curled menacingly towards goal, only to be denied by the woodwork. The champions continued to press, and in first-half stoppage time, a header from Samuel Anakwe was brilliantly parried away by Rivers United goalkeeper Osagie Onisodumeya, ensuring the teams went into the break level at 1-1.
The second half failed to produce any goal with Rivers United coming close to scoring.
However, the game ended on a dramatic note when Rivers United captain, Temple Emekayi, was sent off in added time after 90 minutes for dangerous play.
The 1-1 draw means Rivers United extends its unbeaten streak in opening matchweek fixtures to 13, since a 1-0 loss at Akwa United in March 2013.
Remo Stars will now shift their focus to their next fixture, a trip to the Southeast to face newly promoted Kun Khalifat FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. Rivers United, meanwhile, will return home to host Kwara United.
