Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe believes that Jose Riveiro has done superbly well during his time as the head coach of Orlando Pirates.

In a shocking move last week, Riveiro announced his decision to step down as the head coach of the South African club at the end of the season. Riveiro had joined Pirates in 2022.

Coming out of the 2021/22 season, the Buccaneers had finished sixth in the league with only 10 wins from the 30 matches; a first-round exit in the MTN8 to Swallows as well as a defeat to Marumo Gallants in the Round of 16 of the Nedbank Cup.

However, after the season, the Portuguese tactician managed to win five domestic Cups. In the current campaign, Pirates are chasing for three trophies – the CAF Champions League, Betway Premiership and the Nedbank Cup.

Asked about Riveiro’s decision to step down after their 1-0 Betway Premiership lose against the same side, Mohafe said as quoted by idiskitimes: “Even though that is out of my league, I can say he has done a massive job there.

“Winning six or five cups in three seasons is not a child’s play. Winning a cup every season is not a child’s play. So, he has contributed massively into our league.”

After the league win, Riveiro and Pirates will shift focus to the Champions League, where they are scheduled to host MC Alger in the return leg of the quarter-final clash at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday.

Pirates will head into the fixture with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg played in Algiers.
