Romain Saiss: Ex-Morocco captain retires from international football

Former Morocco national team captain Romain Saiss has taken the decision to quit international football.

In a post on his Instagram account, Saiss said he was closing “the most beautiful chapter” of his football journey after careful reflection.

The 35-year-old was part of the Morocco squad that participated in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which they hosted on home soil.

However, he only played in their opener against Comoros before he was withdrawn owing to an injury. The Al-Sadd defender officially announced his international retirement on Monday, and he will therefore, not participate in the 2026 World Cup.

Becoming Morocco captain remains greatest honour

“Dear fans of Morocco. Today, I close the most beautiful chapter of my football life. After careful consideration, it is with immense emotion that I announce my international retirement,” the player wrote on his Instagram account.

“Wearing the colors of Morocco and becoming its captain will remain the greatest honour of my career. For me, this jersey transcends sport: it’s a story of roots, family, and heart

“Every time I’ve worn it, I’ve felt the weight of responsibility, but above all, an indescribable pride. As a child, I dreamed of these moments.

“I’ve always given everything for this flag and for this country that has given me so much, constantly guided by love for our nation and respect for its people.”

Having joined the Atlas Lions in 2012 and become captain in 2019, the former Clermont, Le Havre AC, Angers, Wolverhampton, and Besiktas player participated in five Africa Cup of Nations final tournaments (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025) and two World Cups (2018, 2022).
