South Africa’s Betway Premiership side, Royal AM, has finally paid its players and coaches outstanding salaries for December 2024.

In a brief interview with Pan-Africa Football, Royal AM general manager Richard Makhoba said: “We have paid.”

Earlier, the Durban-based Betway Premiership side had apologised to the team’s personnel for the delayed payment of salaries due to legal issues with the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

Club president Shauwn Mkhize attributed the delays to the fact that the club is under curatorship following a preservation order SARS obtained. The dictionary defines curatorship as when someone is appointed to oversee another person who cannot take care of themselves.

SARS accuses Mkhize of owing the tax regulator. Pan-Africa Football could not confirm this independently.

The off-the-field controversies have taken their toll on the otherwise promising club which has gone five consecutive league games without a win and it lies second from the bottom of the log table, one point ahead of basement side Magesi FC.

Royal AM were unable to fulfill their league fixture against Chippa United a fort night ago due the legal issue. Mkhize hit the limelight when she became the first club owner in recent years in South Africa’s top flight after buying the Premiership status of Bloemfontein Celtic.

The South African Football Players Union has since commended Royal AM management for being transparent with the players and coaches on the club’s financial situation.
