Rulani admits interest in Mofokeng; Reveals why Alger can’t land him

MC Alger head coach Rulani Mokwena has confirmed his desire to lure Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng to North Africa, while also explaining the hurdles that are preventing the blockbuster move.

Mokwena’s stock continues to soar in Algeria. Following a 1-0 victory over CS Constantine on Monday night, his MC Alger side moved 11 points clear at the summit of the Algerian Ligue 1. With 11 wins from 14 matches, the nine-time champions are dominant, yet Mokwena remains ambitious about bolstering his squad with South African talent.

The Pursuit of Mofokeng

Addressing the media after Monday’s win, Mokwena was candid about the club’s interest in the Bafana Bafana international, acknowledging that the fans—and the technical team—are eager to see the 21-year-old in Algiers.

“I know the fans want Mofokeng. Believe me, I want Mofokeng as well,” Mokwena admitted. “The club is ambitiou,s and we have explored that possibility.”

Despite MC Alger’s financial muscle and their current domestic dominance, Mokwena revealed that the “stumbling block” isn’t money, but rather the player’s personal career trajectory. According to the former Mamelodi Sundowns tactician, Mofokeng is focused exclusively on a move to the European stage.

“The player has had many offers but has set his sights on going to Europe,” Mokwena explained. “It’s not a lack of ambition from our club president. It’s simply that the player has no ambitions to play elsewhere in Africa right now.”

Mofokeng’s refusal to consider a move within the continent—even to a thriving side like MC Alger—underscores his determination to break into a top-tier global league.

The young attacker previously spent time on trial with Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2023. While a move to England didn’t materialise then, his stock has only risen since, with recent reports linking him to various clubs across Europe and Saudi Arabia.

For now, while Mokwena continues his march toward the Algerian league title, he will have to do so without his compatriot, as Mofokeng holds out for a dream move to the world’s biggest stages.
