South African-born coach Rulani Mokwena has shed light on his future, just a few days after cutting ties with Moroccan giants Wydad AC.

Mokwena's comments come after Wydad officially announced his departure on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, following a period of special leave granted in late April.

A series of unfavourable results, which left Wydad without any trophies at the end of the season, led to Mokwena being granted special leave. During his 35 matches in charge, he recorded 14 victories.

Wydad ultimately finished third in the Botola Pro League with 54 points from 30 games. Interestingly, the Moroccan giants secured their return to CAF Interclub competition by winning their final three matches, played while Mokwena was on leave.

The club finished the Botola Pro League in third place with 54 points from 30 outings, a significant distance behind champions RS Berkane, who secured the title with 70 points.

In a farewell letter to Wydad, Mokwena revealed he's still considering his future options, aiming to continue his passion for developing players.

“With heartfelt gratitude, I’m stepping away from my role at Wydad AC to embark on the next chapter of my coaching journey," said Mokwena. "I’m immensely proud of what we achieved together. Rebuilding a united team that returned to African competition–where this great club belongs,.

“Despite challenges, including our unfortunate defeat to MAS, there were many great moments, like our five-match winning streak and some great football. I think this lays a strong foundation for future success.

“I’m deeply thankful to this incredible group of players, humble, passionate, and talented, who made this journey special. With patience, this group, led by a remarkable President, can achieve greatness.

"To the fans, your unwavering support fueled us through every moment. To the staff, thank you for your dedication; I wish you continued success.

As I pursue new opportunities in football management, I carry forward great experiences and my commitment to beautiful football. Developing players and clubs and building projects rooted in passion and competitive success. Thank you for your incredible support.

“Go on and reclaim your position as one of Africa’s greatest clubs.”
