Rulani Mokwena hints at big ambitions with MC Alger

Newly appointed coach of Algerian Ligue 1 champions MC Alger, Rulani Mokwena, says he has found a strong squad after beginning work at the club. The South African coach last worked for Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Mokwena told the local Algerian press that the squad he has inherited at Alger is in very good condition. “I found a well-prepared team in very good condition. This gives me confidence to work calmly,” said the 38-year-old trainer.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns coach noted that he took the job at MC Alger to replicate domestic league success and be competitive in the CAF Champions League.

“I came to maintain the momentum of winning titles, but also to elevate MC Alger to the summit of African football. We want to offer our supporters victories and beautiful football.”

MC Alger are rumoured to be seeking the services of Algerian star striker Youcef Belaïli. The forward currently plays for Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis. Mokwena praised Belaïli but declined to comment further on the transfer saga.

“I was expecting this question. Belaïli is an exceptional player whom I had the opportunity to face when he played for Espérance de Tunis. He is a talented footballer whom I also watched during the Club World Cup. But I prefer not to say more, as he is still under contract with another club.”

Mokwena did confirm that he is working closely with club president Hadj Redjem to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season, with new signings expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
