Kenyan striker Elvis Rupia has maintained his focus is to help Singida Black Stars achieve their targets for the season despite currently leading the top scorers chart in the Tanzanian Mainland Premier League.
The 29-year-old former AFC Leopards striker found the back of the net yet again as Singida defeated KenGold 2-1 on Tuesday to take his tally of goals to eight. Rupia is closely followed by Simba SC’s attacking midfielder Jean Charles Ahoua, who has found the back of the net seven times while Clement Mzize of Young Africans (Yanga SC) is third with six goals.
“If I become the top scorer, I will be very happy because that is the goal of any striker,” Rupia said as quoted by the Guardian. “However, what I value most is the team’s performance. My focus is on helping us finish in the top four, which is our primary target.”
On his great season so far, Rupia said: “The cooperation I receive from my colleagues is something I am very proud of. It motivates everyone, from the players to the technical bench and management, to work towards achieving our goals.”
In a recent interview, Singida Black Stars interim coach Ramadhan Nswanzurimo explained the importance of having a striker like Rupia in his ranks. “Elvis is an important player for us, but he must stay sharp and continue taking advantage of the chances he gets,” he said.
Before moving to Tanzania, Rupia was crowned the top scorer in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League 2023 season after notching 27 goals for Kenya Police, a feat that saw him break the long-standing record of goals scored in one season that was held by Gor Mahia’s Moris Aloo Sonyi, who scored 26 goals in 1976.
