The 2024/25 Rwanda Premier League season has been one of exciting football, and among the standout stars of the campaign are two Ugandan footballers, Emmanuel Okwi and Nicholas Ssebwato, who have both earned well-deserved nominations for the coveted Player of the Season award.
Emmanuel Okwi: AS Kigali’s Leading Forward The dynamic forward, Emmanuel Okwi, has been a key figure for AS Kigali this season, leading the line with skill and determination. As the club’s captain, Okwi played a pivotal role in their strong finish, helping them secure a 3rd place position in the league with 49 points from 30 matches.
With 9 goals, he was the 6th highest scorer in the league, proving to be a constant threat to opposing defenses. His attacking prowess, leadership, and commitment to his team have been central to AS Kigali’s success this season.
Although Okwi was eight goals behind the league’s top scorer, Umar Abba of Bugesera, his all-around performances both as a leader and a finisher made him an indispensable asset to the team. His tenacity and experience were felt throughout the season, and he has rightfully earned his spot among the league’s best.
Nicholas Ssebwato: Mukura’s Defensive Rock At the other end of the pitch, Nicholas Ssebwato, captain of Mukura Victory, has been a wall for his team, earning a nomination for Goalkeeper of the Season in addition to his Player of the Season nod.
In his 25 appearances, Ssebwato was nothing short of remarkable, keeping an impressive 13 clean sheets and contributing 2 assists an unusual but invaluable contribution from a goalkeeper. His leadership at the back was key in guiding Mukura to a 5th place finish on the log. Ssebwato’s ability to read the game, make crucial saves, and organize his defense has been a standout feature of Mukura’s season.
His nomination for Goalkeeper of the Season speaks to his consistency and his undeniable influence on the pitch. The Ugandan international has proven time and again that he is not just a shot-stopper, but a leader who commands his box and inspires confidence in his teammates. These nominations are a testament to the rising profile of Ugandan players in East African football.
Okwi and Ssebwato have both demonstrated exceptional leadership and skill in the Rwanda Premier League, and their recognition is a proud moment not just for their clubs, but for Ugandan football as a whole.
As the league’s award ceremony approaches, both players will be hoping to add another accolade to their illustrious careers, but one thing is certain: they have both already left an indelible mark on the 2024/25 season.
