Nyambe: Reading FC media
Namibia national team defender Ryan Nyambe has reflected on his debut for English third-tier league side Reading FC, and how he wants to build on that performance.
The 28-year-old right-back completed his switch from English Football League (EFL) Championship side Derby County to the EFL League One team in the January transfer window.

He had struggled for game-time at Derby Country, making just seven appearances this season, largely due to the effects of injuries. Overall, he made 47 appearances for the Rams after joining them in the 2023 season.
The 2019 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations representative for Namibian returned to action last Saturday in the 2-0 victory over Northampton FC.
Reflecting on his debut, Nyambe said he was looking forward to continued regular action in Saturday’s game against AFC Wimbledon FC.
“We got a good result in the last game so it’s about getting points on the board,” the former Blackburn Rovers star told RoyalsTV. “We have to be positive and take each game and look forward.
“The previous game was away, and you had to do your introduction and sing in front of the group, which was a good icebreaker. The lads are great, it’s a good group and they have made me feel so welcome. Travelling with the lads on the bus helps.”
The Brave Warriors defender, who is capped 17 times, shared his feeling of playing for the entire 90 minutes after months of inactivity.
“I played my last full match in August- so it had been a few months! Coming here and playing my first 90 minutes, it was quite tough, but I got through it and after that I felt fine. It’s about moving forward,” Nyambe added.
Wimbledon are in 16th place while Reading sit 10th in the EFL standings with 40 points from 28 games, lying 20 points behind leaders Cardiff City. Nyambe will surely contribute to the push for a top-four finish and ignite the flame for a remote hope for Championship play-off.
Namibia national team defender Ryan Nyambe has reflected on his impactful debut for Reading FC, expressing a clear desire to build on his early performances as the “Royals” push for a spot in the EFL Championship play-offs.
The 28-year-old right-back completed a strategic loan switch from Derby County to the Select Car Leasing Stadium in the January transfer window. After struggling for consistent minutes at Pride Park—where he made just seven appearances this term due to nagging injury setbacks—Nyambe has arrived in Berkshire with a point to prove.

Nyambe’s return to competitive action was marked by a start in the 2-0 victory over Northampton Town on Saturday, February 7. It was a significant personal milestone for the Brave Warriors defender, who had not completed a full 90-minute match since August 2025.
“I played my last full match in August—so it had been a few months! Coming here and playing my first 90 minutes, it was quite tough, but I got through it and after that I felt fine. It’s about moving forward,” Nyambe told RoyalsTV.
The transition has been smoothed by the welcoming atmosphere at the club. Nyambe noted that the traditional “initiation song” during the away trip served as a great icebreaker, helping him bond quickly with a group he describes as “great lads.”
While Nyambe’s debut provided a clean sheet, his second outing against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, February 14, was a more chaotic affair. In a pulsating encounter at Plough Lane, Reading suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat, largely due to a sensational hat-trick from the Dons’ Marcus Browne.
Despite the loss, Nyambe was a constant outlet on the right flank, linking up well with Matt Ritchie and Lewis Wing. The match highlighted the physical demands of League One, a division Nyambe knows well having previously won promotion with both Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.
Under manager Leam Richardson, Reading has transitioned toward a more defensively stable 4-2-3-1 formation. The acquisition of Nyambe is a direct response to the long-term injury of Derrick Williams and the need for senior experience at the back.
Defensive Solidity: Nyambe is primarily a defensive-minded right-back who thrives in one-on-one situations. His ability to tuck in and play as a third center-back allows the left-back, Jeriel Dorsett, more license to roam forward.
Versatility: Though he has spent the bulk of his career on the right, his experience at center-back provides Richardson with vital tactical flexibility during the “thick and fast” fixture schedule of February and March.
Following the result against Wimbledon, Reading currently sits 10th in the EFL League One standings with 43 points from 30 games. While they remain adrift of the automatic promotion spots held by Cardiff City and Lincoln City, the gap to the top six is bridgeable.
Nyambe’s experience in high-pressure promotion races will be a priceless asset. With 17 caps for Namibia and two AFCON appearances (2019 and 2023) under his belt, he possesses the big-game temperament required for the season’s final stretch.
The “Brave Warrior” is clearly focused on the long game. “We have to be positive and take each game and look forward,” he asserted. As Reading prepares for their next clash against Wycombe Wanderers, all eyes will be on Nyambe to see if he can ignite the flame for a late-season surge.
