However, Kenya wasted two penalties from Richard Odada and Mohammed Bajaber to lose the game. Kenya scored four penalties to lose 4-5. Speaking after the game, McCarthy said he was impressed with the team’s performance despite the defeat.
“I think I played a good game especially in the second half. I tried to follow the instructions and move the ball quickly, and I think that is what has contributed to my scoring. I believe it has been a good game, the penalty was hard luck,” said Ogam after the game.
“The difference was just playing with more energy and playing with a purpose because the tactics were right, but we were told to play with passion and that made a huge difference.”
On scoring for Kenya, he said: “It’s a great feeling scoring for the national team again, I thank God. The last six months have been very difficult, and I feel good because this gives me the morale and confidence ahead of the national team games and club games.
“I thank God. Though we haven’t achieved the outcome we wanted, all in all, I’m grateful. It’s all about preparation because even during the hard times, you have to stay grounded because the situation can change.
“I have been preparing, hoping one day the chance will come, and the coach gave me a chance, and I have repaid that loyalty.”
Kenya will face Grenada in the third-place playoff after the latter suffered a 4-0 defeat against Rwanda at the same venue.
The 2026 edition of this initiative will feature 48 national teams – representing almost a quarter of FIFA’s 211 Member Associations – competing in 12 groups of four teams each.
Kenya are using the Series as part of their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will host the 36th edition from June 19th to July 18th.
