As KwaZulu-Natal prepares for the Soweto Derby showdown in the Nedbank Cup final, Teko Modise has revisited his earlier statement expressing belief in Amakhosi's chances of winning a trophy this season.
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are set to clash at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 3.30pm (CAT) this Saturday.
Pirates and Sundowns legend Modise is of the view that Chiefs' near ten-year trophy drought has gone on for too long. The last time Chiefs had a taste of silverware was in the 2014/15 season, winning both the MTN8 and the Premiership with Stuart Baxter at the helm.
Modise argues that a club of Chiefs' calibre and history must end this barren spell. His earlier sentiment on the matter was clear: "Yes please, we need them [Chiefs] to win a trophy this season."
In an interview with FARPost on Friday in Durban, Modise reiterated his words and added: “First of all, the reason I said what I said at the beginning of the [year], that it is an opportunity for Chiefs to win the trophy is because, at some point, something has to give.
“And being a club that has so much history with so many fans within the country itself crying out about the same thing, 'trophy’. You look at all your arch-rivals, they are winning trophies, and at some point, something is going to give.
“You look at Kaizer Chiefs, things are not good and this might be the trophy that turns things around. But yet again, you are playing an Orlando Pirates team who are very difficult. They have got so much confidence going into any game, believing that they are going to win.
“I think that’s an advantage [for Pirates], going into such games.”
