SAFA responds to Raymond Mdaka's salary claims in Parliament

The South African Football Association (SAFA) appeared before the parliamentary committee for Sport, Arts and Culture on Tuesday, addressing various governance issues, including the controversial salary of Under-20 National Team coach Raymond Mdaka.
The SAFA delegation, led by President Danny Jordaan, CEO Lydia Monyepao, and other National Executive Committee members, faced questions on topics ranging from financial statements and VAR implementation to equality and sponsorship challenges.
The SA Football Association has recently come under intense scrutiny following revelations about coach Mdaka's salary. Mdaka, who led Amajita to a historic U-20 AFCON triumph in Egypt, saw his success overshadowed by claims made by former SAFA technical director Walter Steenbok.
During a recent radio interview, Steenbok alleged that Mdaka earned less than R25,000 per month. These revelations sparked public outrage, particularly when contrasted with the reported R1 million-plus monthly salary of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos.
In the parliamentary session this afternoon, SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao faced direct questions from Makashule Gana of RISE Mzansi regarding the salaries of national team coaches, particularly the Under-20 coach, Raymond Mdaka.
The Exchange Unfolded as Follows:
Gana questioned: "Is it true that the Amajita coach earns less than R30,000 per month?"
Monyepao responded directly: "It's not true."
Gana followed up: "He earns more than R30,000?"
Monyepao affirmed: "Yes, he does."
Pushing further, Gana asked: "Is it more than R50,000?"
Monyepao stated: "No. That I know of."
Finally, Gana pivoted to the Bafana Bafana coach: "The coach of Bafana Bafana earns more than a million per month?"
Monyepao confirmed: "Yes, that's true."
