A highly anticipated clash between the current English Premier League leaders and last season's champions saw Liverpool emerge victorious with a routine 2-0 victory at the Ettihad Stadium on Sunday.
Billed as an exciting clash between long time Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah and rising talent Omar Marmoush, the match underwhelmed as Liverpool looked in firm control with Salah showing why he is the most in form player in world football. Salah opened the scoring inside fifteen minutes from a well executed corner kick by Liverpool.
It was the same story for City supporters who have become accustomed to their team's underwhelming performances after a sudden downturn in form that began at the end of October. City passed the ball around purposefully with nothing to show from superiority in possession, a familiar sight when the dark side of Pep Guardiola's tactics are revealed. The match was all but over when Salah set up Dominik Szaboszlai for the second goal in the 37th minute.
Salah completed yet another milestone, surpassing fifty goal contributions this season (30 goals, 21 assists). Liverpool also increased their lead at the top with Sunday's victory to move eleven points clear of Arsenal after the Gunners fell at home to West Ham United on Saturday. The Reds do have another stern test in three days when they host Newcastle United.
For Marmoush and Manchester City, the giants are well out of the Premier League title chase and also eliminated from the UEFA Champions League. The Citizens sit twenty points back of Liverpool in fourth place and will attempt to rediscover their form at home against Tottenham on Wednesday.
