Egyptian star Mohamed Salah continued his fine form with Liverpool, guiding the Reds to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the opening round of the Champions League league stage.
Liverpool got off to a flying start at Anfield, striking twice within the opening six minutes. Andrew Robertson opened the scoring in the 4th minute, before Salah doubled the lead just two minutes later with a sharp finish from inside the penalty area.
Atletico Madrid, however, refused to fold. The Spanish side struck back through Marcos Llorente, who pulled one back in first-half stoppage time and later leveled the score in the 81st minute, setting up a tense finale.
Just when the match seemed destined to end in a draw, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk rose to the occasion, netting the decisive goal in the 92nd minute to seal a dramatic victory for Arne Slot’s side.
With the win, Liverpool secured their first three points in the Champions League league phase. Salah also opened his scoring account in this season’s competition, adding to the decisive penalty he converted deep into stoppage time against Burnley in the Premier League last weekend.
