Ghanaian midfielder Salifu Ibrahim is set to begin a new chapter in his international career after earning a debut call-up to the Benin national male team.
This marks his first inclusion in the squad since making the high-profile decision to switch his international allegiance to the West African nation.
The former Hearts of Oak star was named in the 30-man list by German trainer Gernot Rohr for an upcoming international friendly match against Burkina Faso on November 18. This invitation officially confirms earlier widespread reports that the left-footed playmaker was set to naturalise for the Cheetahs.
The 25-year-old currently plies his trade for FC Drita in Kosovo, where he helped secure a league title after his move from Ghana in 2021. During his time in the Ghana Premier League with Eleven Wonders and then Hearts of Oak, Ibrahim was instrumental in helping the Phobians secure a league title and the FA Cup.
Ibrahim is expected to inject creativity and flair into the Benin squad and is tipped to command a regular starting role.
The Cheetahs recently qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they are placed in Group D alongside DR Congo, Senegal, and Botswana. Ibrahim’s addition provides a timely boost as the team prepares for the continental showpiece.
