Richards Bay FC goalkeeper Salim Magoola has explained what his call-up to Uganda’s National Football team means to his career.
Magoola earlier expressed his frustrations over his continued omission from the Cranes assignments. His absence from the national team duties undermined the fact that he was a consistent performer in the Betway Premiership.
It was suggested that the keeper had fallen out for frequently confronting the Federation of Uganda Football Associations over unpaid dues. However, Magoola challenged those who linked his omission from country duties to indiscipline.
Last year, the star keeper tweeted: “Being straight isn’t indiscipline, and I have never been an indisciplined player. Played for 6 professional clubs with no suspension.”
The Cranes coach coach Paul Put had preferred Charles Lukwago and Ismail Watenga as the national team keepers. However, the Belgian mentor has made a U-turn to recall Magoola and his Mamelodi Sundowns counterpart Denis Onyango. The Cranes face Mozambique and Somalia in World Cup qualifiers next month. Little wonder, the Richards Bay man has explained what his call-up to the Cranes’ squad means to his professional football career.
The shot-stopper tweeted: “I am truly honoured and grateful to be called back to serve the national team. This call-up comes after a challenging period, but I have been so touched by messages of congratulations, and we are so thankful to everyone who has appreciated my hard work in the South African league.”
“For those who have been asking why I wasn’t on the team, thank you for your support. It means so much to me to know that you believed in me. This is our country, and we all share the same passion for this sport. It is important that we recognize everyone’s contribution and hard work.”
He added: “Seeing how happy so many of you are about my return has filled me with a great sense of motivation. I am ready to work hard and fight for our flag whenever I get the chance to represent our nation.”
Magoola is returning to the national team after close to two years away. He last featured for the Uganda against Guinea in November 2023.
On the other hand, Onyango announced his retirement from international football on April 12, 2021 after over 16 years of service.
