Ghana U20 striker Jerry Afriyie has admitted that he harboured staged fright when he earned his senior national team call up.
The U-20 star made history as the first player from the Ghanian third-tier league to be called-up to the Black Stars in November last year for 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification qualifiers.
In an interview with Sporty FM, the 18-year-old admitted to being scared of playing alongside big name players in the squad.
“I prayed to get Black Stars call-up but when it happened, I was also afraid because I was going to meet big players,” Jerry Afriyie said.
He scored on his debut against Niger on 16 November 2024 where Ghana lost 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium in the last 2025 AFCON qualifiers. He still holds his first ever senior goal very dear to his heart.
“Scoring for the Black Stars against Niger was the best feeling ever,” he added.
The former Thought FC forward signed for the Saudi club, Al Qadsiah from Ghanaian lower-tier side Thoughts FC but was immediately sent on loan to Spanish club CD Lugo.
The talented forward will spend the rest of the season on loan at Lugo before moving to Saudi to begin his career in the Middle East.
Afriyie arrived in Spain last week and has already started training with his new club and could make his debut for them in the game against Athletic Bilbao B. Lugo are currently 14th on the Primera Federacion table.
