Ex-Chiefs star Sekgota marks top-flight return with 30-second goal

It took just 30 seconds for former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota to announce his return to the SA football top-flight league in Richards Bay.

In a script that felt written for the cameras, Sekgota—playing his debut match for Siwelele FC—stunned the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Friday night. With the game barely underway, Sekgota latched onto the ball and unleashed a trademark left-footed strike from outside the box, leaving the keeper helpless and handing Siwelele an electric 1-0 lead.

For Sekgota, the goal was more than just a point on the scoreboard; it was the culmination of a gruelling journey back from the brink. He played for 68 minutes before being replaced by Christian Saile.

The Long Road to Redemption For Ex-Chiefs Star

The 28-year-old’s return to the Betway Premiership follows a period of intense personal and professional rebuilding. After battling off-field challenges and substance addiction, the pacey winger was forced to grind through the ABC Motsepe League (South Africa’s third division) with Tubatse United to prove his fitness and focus.

Having previously donned the colours of Vitória Setúbal in Portugal, Bidvest Wits, and Stellenbosch FC, Sekgota’s move to Siwelele represents a final lifeline to fulfil the immense potential that once made him a fan favourite at Naturena.

Spoils Shared in Richards Bay

While Sekgota provided the early spark, the ‘Natal Rich Boyz’ refused to lie down. Richards Bay gradually grew into the contest, finding their equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

A lapse in discipline saw Keabetswe Khonyane bring down Lundi Mahala inside the area. Moses Mthembu stepped up to the spot, coolly converting the penalty in the 46th minute to level matters just before the interval.

The second half turned into a tactical stalemate, largely defined by the heroics of Richards Bay goalkeeper Ian Otieno. The shot-stopper produced a string of world-class saves to deny Christian Basomboli and Chibuike Ohizu, ensuring the hosts walked away with a share of the spoils.

A New Chapter Under Seema

Despite the 1-1 draw, Siwelele head coach Lehlohonolo Seema will be buoyed by Sekgota’s immediate impact. With the winger competing for spots alongside veterans like Vincent Pule and Tebogo Potsane, his “30-second statement” suggests he is ready to help propel the club toward a top-eight finish.

After a stint in the Limpopo lower leagues, the man they call “Crous” is officially back where he belongs—under the bright lights of the Premiership.
