The Nedbank Cup Last 16 action continued to deliver high-stakes drama across the country on Sunday, but unlike the previous day’s upsets, the favourites and established sides managed to navigate their way into the next round.
At Tuks Stadium in Pretoria, the primary focus was on a gritty battle where Betway Premiership side Sekhukhune United narrowly overcame a resilient University of Pretoria side to secure their quarter-final berth.
In the day’s marquee matchup, Sekhukhune United relied on defensive discipline and a singular moment of brilliance to overcome a stubborn University of Pretoria.
After a scoreless first half defined by tactical caution and several yellow cards—including a booking for United’s Lehlogonolo Mojela just five minutes in—the deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute. Vuyo Letlapa proved to be the hero, unleashing a precise left-footed strike from outside the box that nestled into the bottom right corner, courtesy of a well-timed assist by Siphesihle Mkhize.
The University of Pretoria refused to go down without a fight, forcing Sekhukhune goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata into several crucial saves during the second half. Nsabata was particularly busy between the 51st and 58th minutes, denying efforts from Sidney Mtshweni and Prince Nxumalo. Despite a late flurry of substitutions from both sides and a persistent offensive push from Tuks, Sekhukhune’s veteran-led defence held firm to navigate a tense final ten minutes and secure the 1-0 victory.

At the Richards Bay Stadium, Milford FC produced a clinical late surge to brush aside Mkhambathi with a convincing 3-0 victory. The game remained a stalemate for over an hour as both sides struggled to find a clinical edge in the final third. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 67th minute when Bulelani Sigomoshe rose highest to head home a Sifiso Mdluli cross.
Sigomoshe then turned provider, setting up Siphosethu Ndlabi in the 76th minute for a powerful strike into the roof of the net. The rout was completed in the 88th minute when Tonny Mbunga slotted home a left-footed effort from the centre of the box. While Mkhambathi showed flashes of quality, they were unable to convert their chances, leaving Milford to comfortably advance as the dominant force of the day.
Over at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium, Jacksa Spears secured a slender but vital 1-0 win over Vasco da Gama in a Nedbank Cup match that was as much a test of temperament as it was of skill. The decisive moment arrived in the 41st minute when Itumeleng Olyn reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box, firing home from close range to give the hosts the lead just before the interval.
The second half of the Nedbank Cup round of 16 tie was a disciplinary nightmare for Vasco da Gama, as Mogamat Kiyaam Bull was shown a straight red card in the 53rd minute for a dangerous challenge. Forced to play with ten men, the visitors struggled to mount a consistent comeback, and despite late pressure that saw several bookings for both sides, Spears held their nerve. The victory ensures their progression to the quarter-finals, where they join a competitive field of cup hopefuls.
