Pape Thiaw, the Senegal coach, delivered important remarks ahead of his side’s upcoming friendly fixtures, as the Lions of Teranga continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Senegal have been drawn into a competitive Group I alongside France national football team, Norway national football team, and the winner of the intercontinental playoff between Iraq national football team and Bolivia national football team.
As part of their March training camp, Senegal are set to play two friendly matches—first against Peru national football team, followed by a clash with Gambia national football team on March 31.
Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Thiaw said:
“We started training on Monday, and the team has been working well. We are preparing seriously for this match. It’s an important game, and we will approach it with full focus while giving opportunities to some players.”
He also confirmed the absence of Iliman Ndiaye from both friendlies, stating:
“We prefer not to take risks with Ndiaye. He will continue his treatment with his club. However, we have a squad of 28 players, so there are enough options to replace him.”
When asked about the controversial decision by Confederation of African Football regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, Thiaw avoided engaging in the debate:
“I don’t want to answer this question because I am focused on my job. Everyone knows we are African champions.”
He added:
“We will continue working to win more titles. For us, trophies are decided on the pitch—and that’s what we did. We are the champions of Africa.”
Thiaw concluded with a humane reflection:
“The only thing I will remember is the joy of bringing the trophy back home. It allowed me to discover the heart of Senegal and present the trophy across the country. It was a great pleasure.”
Notably, CAF recently ruled to strip Senegal of the AFCON 2025 title and award it to Morocco national football team after Senegal partially withdrew from the final then came back and won the game.
The Senegalese Football Federation has appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and is planning to present the AFCON trophy to fans before the friendly against Peru in Paris.
